Nafplio city was the first capital of the modern Greek State

Nafplio holds the distinction of being the first capital of Greece. It became the capital in 1829 right after the Greeks achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire.

The decision to make Nafplio the capital was thanks to the leadership of Ioannis Kapodistrias, who became the head of state for Greece. Kapodistrias, a statesman and diplomat played a role in setting the groundwork for Greece.
