With plenty of beaches, endless blue water, and a crowd-pleasing cuisine, Greece is a sure-fire bet for family holidays.
WHEN TO VISIT?
The best weather in Greece for families with kids (swimming, sun will be out, skies blue) is from late April to the end of September. The absolute beach weather is from late June to early September.

The top attractions in Greece – Acropolis and Acropolis Museum (Athens), the Archeological site of Delphi (Delphi), the Ancient Olympia (Olympia), the Mycenae Archeological site and the Epidaurus Ancient Theatre (Nafplio).
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD AND RESTAURANTS
Almost all restaurants have a family friendly approach/atmosphere where all kids are welcomed. The food ingredients are very fresh (almost in every place in the country) and really really really tasty. I would recommend once you are in Greece to go for the traditional taverns (most of them are located at small villages close to the cities and they are owned and operated by families), where you can really enjoy the authentic Greek cuisine!
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN IT COMES TO BEACHES
Greece is known for its very beautiful beaches! BUT make sure you do not visit the most well known of them during July and August, because there will not be space at all for your kids to enjoy. Locals always know hidden beaches where you and your kids can have an amazing time! (Do not hesitate to ask local people, they will for sure know).
IS THE COUNTRY SAFE FOR FAMILIES WITH KIDS?
Greeks are known for their hospitality. Especially the last years that the tourism industry has a huge increase, local people are familiar to be surrounded by tourists almost 8 to 9 months per year. So, yes, the country is totally safe for you and your kids plus the people will always treat you on a very friendly way with a huge smile!
WHAT ABOUT THE LANGUAGE?
Nowadays almost everyone knows English! (or at least they know how to communicate properly – like I do 🙂 ). The new generations are so familiar with the English language that I am sure you do not have to consider about it. (older people, they do not speak English, but trust me you will be able to communicate even with them!).
SHOULD I RENT A CAR OR USE THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Visiting a country like Greece, which is almost 55% covered by mountains and small villages, it just does not make sense not to drive everywhere! There are so many places that you can visit! ( I would not miss it – the country has amazing villages and hidden beaches everywhere – you can easily drive to many of these).
WHICH DESTINATION SHOULD I CHOOSE? ISLANDS?
I would go for a family friendly place. Yes, Greece is known around the world for its islands with the amazing light blue color beaches, but as a parent, do not choose for yourself, choose for your kids! Islands attract millions of tourists – not only for their amazing beaches – but also for their nightlife. (especially during the high season).
The mainland is more family friendly. Kids want to explore places, kids want to walk around the city, kids like activities, kids enjoy beaches – not beach bars 🙂 The mainland gives exactly all of them. Plus, as a parent, I am sure you want to visit with your kids some archeological sites that will for sure create a positive and educational impact to your kids. (plus kids will be bored sailing on a ferry boat for hours – or at least, I was when I was a child).
Not because I am living in Nafplio, but this city really combines both – mainland and island (you get the same feeling with an island walking around the old city with its very nice small, pedestrian areas). Plus, it is only 1:30 hours drive from Athens airport, which it will not be to long drive for your kids.
SHOULD I BOOK A HOTEL?
Greece has many nice hotels! the last years there are also million options of short term rentals – apartments/flats. I would avoid as a family the hotel option, just because I do not really enjoy staying at a 25 or maximum 40 sp.m hotel room that my kids – they will feel like prisoners (that is the feeling I had when I was staying with my parents at hotel rooms).
For sure, short term apartments are a great option. The last years, since Airbnb came to our life, almost everyone in Greece is renting out his place (you will finds tons of apartments). The kitchen – that you can cook at home is a great advantage for families with kids (90% of our guests are families with kids – they cook!) You have enough space for everyone to feel comfortable and you get the feeling of home away from home – which especially for kids, it is a great value! ( I still remember myself as a kid, missing my home, sleeping at a hotel – do not forget, vacation is for the kids! they are happy, you are happy!).
Be aware of this – due to the increase of Airbnb (short term rentals) in Greece, the options will be millions. Do not just go for a cheap one, considering the price – remember that the majority of the people is not doing it as main business, so many things are not guarantee (cleanliness, presence of the landlord during the check in and the check out, hygiene – do not forget, it is not about you, it is about your kids). Your kids are your little kinds and queens, so do not offer them the cheap option! Give them what they deserve!
